SOM recently developed the Global Interior Design Standards and Manual for BBVA, an international retail banking institution. The emphasis was on creating a highly performative workplace that conveys the company's core brand ideas while bolstering client services and amplifying opportunities for growth. One of the first applications of the new guidelines is in BBVA's new headquarters in Mexico City.

The guidelines represent a radical transformation to a completely open-plan environment. In addition to the general interior, the standards direct the design of offices, elevator lobbies, reception areas, conference rooms, and support areas. They also establish a procurement strategy for fixtures and finishes, with a focus on local manufacturing, installation, and maintenance.
